The Sweet Taste of Spring

The Elmvale Maple Syrup Festival

Every year the sleepy town of Elmvale explodes in a celebration of Nature's rites of Spring - the running of liquid gold - Ontario Pure Maple Syrup. The town transforms into a shoppers' mall. Vendors line the streets with offerings of maple syrup, food galore, book sales, collectible sales among other country treasures. Don't miss the Sugar Shack at the east end of town where you can get information, directions, tickets for the bus to the sugarbush tours as well as your copy of the Festival Directory.Lots of great maple syrup recipes here!! As you approach the Community Hall, you'll smell the delicious aroma of pancakes and sausages- our all day pancake breakfast, a must for all visitors. As you chow down on this delicious fare, enjoy the sweet sounds of North of 50.
At the east end, on the Main Stage you'll meet the Dignitaries, laugh at their log sawing contest and the firefighters pancake eating contest. See the complete line up at Festival Directory. Outside at the arena, kids can pet the animals and go for a pony ride. The whole family can visit the firefighters' display and then have great rides on the midway. Inside the arena treasures abound at the Craft and Quilt shows. Come on out to the charming village of Elmvale and experience our wonderful shops, boutiques and eateries and especially the Maple Syrup Festival.

See you April 21st in the beautiful town of Elmvale.

Go 20 kilometers north of Barrie on Hwy 27 to the Wasaga Beach Road and you will be in the midst of annual celebration of the sweet Spring gold – Maple Syrup at the exciting Elmvale Maple Syrup Festival.

The History

A History of the Elmvale Maple Syrup Festival

n 1966, a small group of 15 or 16 people gathered in the living room of Elmvale School Principal Doug Rose to plan a maple syrup festival. As a result of the meeting, the first Elmvale and District Syrup Festival was held April 9, 1966 yielding a profit of $484.12. Doug Rose, the organizer of the first festival, also became the first chairman. During the next two years, 1967 and 1968, the festival became bigger and better. Profits were distributed among the organizing groups.

After the 1968 festival, Howard Ritchie took over the job of chairman of the newly formed Elmvale and District Maple Syrup Committee. In 1969, the chairman’s position was passed on to Don Thompson. The committee officially received their charter from the Lt. Governor of Canada in 1981 and was renamed the Elmvale and District Festival Association. With the incorporation came two signing officers, Don Thompson and Kennedy Barnett, as well as nine directors. Don and Kennedy continued to direct the festival into the late 1990s.

For several years after that, Jim King and Betty Barnett, wife of Kennedy, became the directing forces behind the Festival. Wayne Thompson, along with Tony Hope and a myriad of assistants/directors followed. Now, Bonnie Clarke has moved into the leadership role with Irene Burgler at her right hand.

Many changes have expanded the festival over the years. Instead of the load being on the shoulders of only a few, we now have many assistants and committee leads who do their jobs for the betterment of the Elmvale area. We thank them.

This annual celebration (1966 to 2010) has blossomed into the second largest festival of its kind in Ontario, drawing crowds of over 30,000 people and supplying funds which aid community-minded projects in the Elmvale Area, fulfilling the mission statement of contributing to the physical, intellectual, cultural, emotional, or spiritual well-being of our community.

The People

The Elmvale Maple Syrup Festival is a fundraising day which supports the needs within the community. All proceeds from this one day event are turned back to our schools, children’s music programs, library support, arena and community hall projects, girl guides and scouts, as well as helping many other projects where other financial sources are not available. Many volunteers and many, many hours of planning and behind the scenes effort have gone into preparing for this day. For 45 years committees have sat and wondered what they could do to make the next Maple Syrup Festival better than the year before.

For many ex-Elmvalites Festival Day developes into a HOME-COMING WEEKEND. What a great time to visit with friends and families as well as have a fun day at the Festival!

We thank all our volunteer helpers for their efforts in putting this day together for you. It is this selfless group who make the Festival possible; the planning committee who meet every month for 10 months; the men, women and children who tirelessly participate each year on Festival Day; the local businesses and organizations who donate so much, such as parking space, flowers, prizes etc.. We would like to thank our Sponsors and Partners whose financial support contributes to the success of our great Festival. We hope you enjoy yourself and come back to visit Elmvale and the beautiful country life we offer here.
